Short Biographies of all speakers (alpha order):

Frank Afranji is a Palestinian-American engineer and Director of Transmission and Reliability services at Portland General Electric. He is active in interfaith and inter-ethnic work in the Portland area. He has served as president of the Interreligious Committee for peace in the Middle East, and as advisor to the Oregon Chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

Shahriar Ahmed is President of the Bilal Mosque Association in Beaverton, Oregon. He has been active for many years in interfaith work within the Portland Community and is on the advisory board for the Institute of Muslim Christian Understanding.

Claire Anastas is a Palestinian Christian from Bethlehem, Claire and her family have spent fourteen years trapped between Israeli politics and Palestinian infighting. They experienced the worst of the intifadas and consequential building of the security/separation wall around her house, close to checkpoint 300.”

Rev. Naim Ateek is an Arab-Israeli citizen and the founder and leader of Sabeel. A theologian and former canon of the Episcopal Cathedral of Jerusalem, Naim is the author of many books and articles including “Justice and Only Justice: A Palestinian Theology of Liberation” and “A Palestinian Christian Cry for Reconciliation”. He works tirelessly to help Palestinian Christians find the faith that will sustain them under occupation.

Hatem Bazian is co-founder and Member of Board of Trustees at Zaytuna College in Berkeley California and Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Near Eastern and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.  He is the co-founder and Chair of American Muslims for Palestine, and author of “Jerusalem in Islamic Consciousness.”

Phyllis Bennis Phyllis Bennis is a Fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, and of the Amsterdam-based Transnational Institute. She is a co-founder of the US Campaign to end the Israeli Occupation. Her books include “Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict: A Primer”,  “Challenging Empire: How People, Governments and the UN Defy U.S. Power”, and “Before & After: U.S. Foreign Policy and the War on Terror.”
 
Max Blumenthal is a journalist and author whose articles and videos have appeared in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Nation and elsewhere. He is the author of “Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party’ and most recently “Goliath: Fear and Loathing in Greater Israel.”

Mark Braverman is a Jewish American psychologist who now devotes himself full-time to the cause for peace in historic Palestine. He focuses on the role of religious beliefs and the future of interfaith relations. He is Program Director of Kairos USA. He is the author of “Fatal Embrace: Christians, Jews, and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land” and “A Wall in Jerusalem: Hope, Healing and Struggle for Peace in Israel and Palestine”.

Donna Boyd Donna Boyd is a neurology nurse in Portland, Oregon.  In 2009 she escorted escorted her niece to Gaza not realizing her life would be profoundly changed and that she would become an activist for Palestinian justice. She focuses on what is happening to the Palestinians with the support of American tax dollars.  She has returned to Gaza several times with the Washington State Physicians for Social Responsibility.

Cindy and Craig Corrie are the parents of human rights activist Rachel Corrie, killed in 2003 in Gaza as she stood to prevent demolition of a Palestinian home. The Corries continue to advocate for accountability in their daughter’s case and for a just peace in the Middle East.

Marion Dawan  is a pioneer in Islamic community building in the Portland area. Marion is a board member of Islamic Social Services, a member of the Shura board of the Muslim Community Center, and an advisory member of the Muslim Educational Trust.

Rev. Diane Dulin has just retired as Pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hillsboro Oregon. She became a Palestinian justice activist after a visit to Palestine two years ago. She works within the United Church of Christ for justice and peace within Israel/Palestine. 

Mads Gilbert M.D. is a specialist in anesthesiology and Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of North Norway in Tromsoe Norway. He has worked extensively with Palestinian people in occupied Palestine. He was in Gaza during Operation Cast Lead and has written a book with his colleague Eric Fosse about his experiences entitled “Eyes in Gaza.”

Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb is Co-founder of the Shomer Shalom Network for Jewish Non-Violence in Berkeley California and is a founding member of the Rabbinical Council of Jewish Voice for Peace. She is the author of “She Who Dwells Within: Feminist Vision of a Renewed Judaism” and “Trail Guide to the Torah of Non-Violence.” She recently lead an interfaith Fellowship of Reconciliation delegation of U.S. artists to Palestine.

Zaha Hassan is a Palestinian-American attorney, writer and human rights advocate.  She worked as a legal advisor to the Palestinian negotiating team during the lead up to and following Palestine’s application for UN membership. She is a co-host with Ned Rosch of the program One Land Many Voices on KBOO Portland Oregon, a radio program that explores the Palestine-Israel conflict through a human rights and international law lens.

Janet Lahr Lewis is a missionary with the Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church in the Middle East. As of 2007 she has served as the Methodist Liaison in Palestine and Israel. Before that she worked for many years as the Coordinator of Friends of Sabeel-International at the Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center in Jerusalem.

Kelly Lynn Kelly Lynn is an activist journalist living part time in Occupied Bethlehem.  She documents local grassroots resistance efforts against Israeli occupation and is active in the Portland area with several solidarity groups.

Ed Mast is a playwright and performer whose plays and solo performances have been seen in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oxford, Tashkent, Jerusalem, and other cities. His play Sahmatah: Memory of Stones (co-written with Hanna Eady), has been touring Israel/Palestine since 1998. He volunteers with Palestine Information Project, Palestine Solidarity Committee/ISM-Seattle, and Seattle Mideast Awareness Campaign.

Peter Miller is founder and president of Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights.  He is a co-chair of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, a national coalition of over 400 organizations nationwide. In 2011 he spoke as a representative of global civil society to the United Nations General Assembly.

Chris McGreal Chris McGreal is a former Jerusalem correspondent for the Guardian. He travelled and reported extensively in Africa for 15 years, including the transition from apartheid in South Africa. He covered the Egyptian and Libyan revolutions for the Guardian. He is presently working on a book about Israel and apartheid. He lives in Portland with his two sons. 

Rev. Brian McClaren Brian D. McLaren is an author, speaker, activist, and networker among innovative Christian leaders. His books include “A New Kind of Christianity”, “A Generous Orthodoxy”, “Naked Spirituality”, and “Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road?” His upcoming book, “We Make the Road by Walking”, is scheduled for release in June, 2014.

Steve Niva is a professor of  International Politics and Middle East Studies at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. He has written for and served on the editorial board of Middle East Report magazine (www.merip.org). He has written widely on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Israel’s occupation, and US foreign policy.

Pamela Olson Pamela J. Olson lived in Ramallah for two years and served as editor for the Palestine Monitor and foreign press coordinator for Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi's 2005 presidential campaign. She is the author of the memoir “Fast Times in Palestine.”

Miko Peled is an Israeli writer and activist. He is the author of “The General’s son: Journey of an Israeli in Palestine.” He is co-founder with Nada Elbanna of the Elbanna-Peled foundation. He is a karate instructor and has taught karate to Palestinian youth in refugee camps.

Mohamed Qandil is a Palestinian-American student at Portland State University. He recently won a student achievement award from the Muslim Educational Trust.

Mazin Qumsiyeh is a geneticist who teaches and does research at Bethlehem and Birzeit Universities.  He has served on the faculties of the University of Tennessee, Duke and Yale Universities.  His  books include "Sharing the Land of Canaan: human rights and the Israeli/Palestinian Struggle" and “Popular Resistance in Palestine: A history of Hope and Empowerment"

Ned Rosch is an activist and co-founder of the Portland chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace. He is  a co-host with Zaha Hassan of the program One Land Many Voices on KBOO in Portland, a radio program that explores the Palestine-Israel conflict through a human rights and international law lens.

Josh Ruebner is the National Advocacy Director of the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. He is a former analyst in Middle East Affairs at the Congressional Research Service. He is the author of “Shattered Hopes: Obama’s Failure to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace.”

Shakeel Syed currently serves the board of American Muslims for Palestine. He has also served on the boards of US Campaign to End Israeli Occupation and Interfaith Peacebuilders He is Executive Director of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California. He speaks on the urgent need for justice in Palestine/Israel.

Rev. Don Wagner is an ordained Presbyterian minister and National Program Director for Friends of Sabeel North America. He was Professor of Middle East Studies at North Park University (1995-2010) and is the author of 4 books.  He is co-editor with Walt Davis of the forthcoming “Zionism and the Quest for Justice in the Holy Land”  (due August, 2014).

Rabbi Joseph Wolf has been the Rabbi of Havurah Shalom, a reconstructionist synagogue in Portland Oregon since 1987. He has brought local and global social change issues to the forefront. He serves on the Rabbinic Advisory Cabinet for J Street and was recently on the board of Rabbis for Human rights.
